As a designer exploring identity through a queer lens, my work revolves around promoting diversity and inclusion, while fostering a deeper connection with nature.I am Chris Bart, a non-binary individual who seeks to challenge societal norms and disrupt binary thinking.

Through the medium of conversation and designed experiences, I create spaces where individuals can engage with my personal experiences as a queer person and reflect on the influences society has on our understanding of queerness. I believe in the power of multi-sensory engagement, where participants can actively participate by using all their senses.

Kaleidoscope of Perspectives

Over the past year, my focus has been on unlearning binary thinking, an inherent limitation that permeates our society. In response, I have developed a workshop that encompasses various elements, including a nature walk, a sorting exercise, and the creation of a poster. This workshop serves as a catalyst for raising awareness about the constraints of binary thinking and emphasises the need to challenge its default nature. Together, we can challenge the default setting of binary thinking and pave the way for a more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate society that embraces the full spectrum of human diversity.

Breaking the Binary Project

Binary (or dualistic) thinking refers to the tendency to see things in terms of two opposing categories, such as male and female, gay and straight, or natural and unnatural. This way of thinking can be limiting and exclusionary, as it often reinforces stereotypes and reinforces the idea that certain groups are superior to others. Breaking the Binary explores different examples in nature that may not fit into binary categories. Experience this project by listening to an interactive absorbing ritual and submerge yourself without the limitations of binary thinking.

Social Cook Book

The Social Cook Book is a collaborative publication with Groenten Zonder Grenzen (GZG), a non-profit organization based in Rotterdam. GZG has been dedicated to rescuing surplus produce from local markets and transforming it into delicious, free vegan meals for a diverse community. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced a shift from communal dinners to take-away meals, resulting in the loss of cherished shared experiences and meaningful conversations. To bridge this gap, the Social Cook Book was born—a collection of three booklets that celebrate plant-based cooking, raise awareness about food waste, and promote social inclusion.
